Surging waters that break their banks, calling forth collective awareness and rebirth through new forms of dissent and grassroots solidarity, form the conceptual and sonic core of We Are Surging Waters, the new studio album by Rosa Brunello. 

The album vibrates with the force of collective movements around the world that, over the past year, have sought to disrupt inertia and silence. This is music shaped by plurality: a convergence of horizons in which every nuance gives vital meaning to the whole. Across nine tracks, rhythm is always centered, feet remain firmly on the ground, and the gaze faces the future with optimism and hope.

Rosa Brunello is a composer, bassist, and double bassist with seven studio albums to her name and an extensive list of illustrious collaborations, such as working with Dee Dee Bridgewater as part of the vocalist’s live band and with Maurice Louca’s Elephantine project. Brunello’s music transcends and breaks down boundaries, tracing a line that moves from jazz to engage Middle Eastern traditions through improvisation and dub. Guided by an original and exploratory approach, her work has taken her to stages throughout South America, Japan, Canada, Egypt, Senegal and across Europe.

We Are Surging Waters builds on Brunello’s substantial experience, marking a new peak in her artistic vision—one that is multicultural, participatory, and deeply rooted in the present moment. The album also reaffirms an aligned vision with Domanda Music, the Los Angeles–based label founded by Tommaso Cappellato, for whom this release represents the tenth entry in the catalog. 

From the album title’s emphatic “we” and onward, the work foregrounds a spirit of collectivity that exists both within and beyond the music, reflected in the deep rapport among the musicians who have long accompanied Brunello on stage and in the studio. The album interweaves musical languages and distant geographies, where the solidity of earth meets the fluidity of water. It breathes through moods, encounters, conflicts, and new forms of consciousness, and was strongly influenced by a journey to Senegal undertaken by Brunello shortly before recording, then shared with part of the band for performances at the Saint-Louis International Jazz Festival and in Dakar.

Recorded over three days in June 2025 and largely shaped by improvisation, We Are Surging Waters stands out for the extraordinary synergy of the ensemble, which functions like a fluid yet compact big band. The sound is energized by the presence of dual drums on several tracks and a vitality that grew out of live performances shared in the months leading up to the studio sessions.  With optimism and awareness, We Are Surging Waters translates the urgent need, both musical and human, of being together in the moment. The album unfolds as a journey through the Mediterranean, where the present is reinvigorated by the past, recalling the 1990s, a time when shared social space always outweighed the individual.
